Renunciation of Sri Lankan Citizenship
Sri Lankan citizens who wish to renounce their citizenship may apply in accordance with the provisions of the Citizenship Act and regulations of the Department of Immigration and Emigration, Sri Lanka.
Eligibility
Applicants must:
- Be a citizen of Sri Lanka
- Have obtained citizenship of another country
- Be of full age and legal capacity
Applications for renunciation of Sri Lankan citizenship can be submitted through the High Commission or directly to the Citizenship Division of the Department of Immigration and Emigration, Sri Lanka.
Document Requirements
Applicants must submit the following:
- Request letter
- Completed Application -Form “K”
- Original Sri Lankan Birth Certificate (and copy)
- Sri Lankan Passport (and copy)
- National Identity Card (if available)
- Original Dual Citizenship Certificate (if available)
- Original 5(2) Citizenship Certificate (if available)
- Proof of Foreign Citizenship (naturalisation certificate or foreign passport) and a copy

Important
- Applicants are advised not to renounce Sri Lankan citizenship until foreign citizenship is secured, to avoid becoming stateless
- Applications are processed by the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Sri Lanka
- Renunciation becomes effective only upon approval by the competent authority.
- Once the approval is received, the applicant will be notified by the High Commission to collect the certificate.
- The High Commission may request additional documentation, where necessary, from the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Sri Lanka
