Obtaining Birth / Marriage / Death Certificate Extracts, Registered in Sri Lanka

Applicants may obtain Birth, Marriage, or Death Certificate Extracts registered under the Sri Lankan law either over the counter or by post from

the High Commission of Sri Lanka in London.

1.     Checking Online whether certificate is available in the e-BMD System

·        You can Check Online whether your certificate, or a family member’s certificate, is available in the e-BMD system before visiting

         the High Commission. https://ebmd.rgd.gov.lk 

·        After Receiving the confirmation via e-mail, visit the High Commission, pay and collect your certificate. 

 2.      Obtaining a Birth / Marriage / Death Certificate Extract over the Counter

• The application form may be downloaded here or obtained from the Consular Counter.
• The certificate extract will be issued on the same day, subject to availability in the system.

 3.     Obtaining a Birth / Marriage / Death Certificate Extract by Post

Applicants applying by post should send the following to the High Commission:

• A duly completed application form to download click here
• A copy of the relevant certificate, if available
• The applicable fee of £19 per copy, Postal Order made payable to “Sri Lanka High Commission”
• Self-addressed prepaid Special Delivery envelope for the return of certificates/documents.

Certificate collection

·        Applications received without a prepaid return envelope will be retained at the High Commission until collected by the applicant.

·        If the applicant is unable to collect the certificate/documents personally, another person may be authorised in writing to collect

         them on the applicant’s behalf.

·        The authorised person must produce: their proof of identity, and the original receipt issued by the High Commission.

·        The High Commission does not accept responsibility for documents lost or damaged that are sent by post. 

4.     Where the Certificate is Not Available in the e-BMD System

·        If the required Birth / Marriage / Death Certificate is not available in the e-BMD system, applicants may:

         Submit a direct request to the relevant Divisional Secretariate office or Central Record Room in Sri Lanka.

Fees and Payment Details

• Method of Payment – Cash, Debit/Credit card, Postal Order (Postal Order should be drawn in favour of the Sri Lanka High Commission)
• Please note that personal cheques will not be accepted.
• Fees paid will not be refunded under any circumstances.
